It's December

Believe it or not there are only 12 more days of school until winter break!

I wanted to announce the next Monday- December 6th will be school picture day.
Order forms will be in your parent boxes this week,
so send it back with your payment on Monday.
We will begin at 9:30.

Every student will have their photo taken for the yearbook
and a class picture will be taken as well.

The students are currently working on a geography unit
that will lead up to our Multi-cultural Fair on Thursday December 16th.

The K-2 students are making globes and studying bears around the world.

3-5 grade students are working on individual/small-group projects.
They have chosen a country of interest and will be exploring
traditions, food, and culture from that country.

Food, information and activities from their chosen country will be presented at the Multi-cultural Fair.
Ask your student what they are studying and what they have learned.

The Steering Committee will meet on Monday December 13 at 6:00.
All parents are welcome to add agenda items and/or attend the meeting.

November

Just a quick reminder that next week is parent conference week.
This means 2 important things:

1) Every day next week is early dismissal, so school is over at 1:10.
There will be aftercare during this time, but
be aware that aftercare bills can double on a minimum week-
so use your child care as needed.

2) This is your chance to meet with Aly or Sarah and get first-hand
information about your child/ren.
The teachers will have report cards to discuss and give to you,
and they always have insightful thoughts to share about your wonderful kids.
Please take advantage of the time we have scheduled for afternoon meetings.

Next Friday (11/19) you are all invited to join us for our annual Harvest Potluck.
Because it is a half-day, we are having a brunch potluck at 11:00.
Please join us for food and company before our Thanksgiving week off.

* Don't forget- this Thursday and Friday (11/11 & 11/12) there is no school for students.

End of October Already!

As the season is rapidly changing to wet and cold,
we are staying busy at school and want to let
you know about the next few weeks.

This Friday is our annual Halloween Carnival.

Please come and have fun with us from 1:00-3:00.
This is the one day we have a moratorium on candy
and we usually have a blend of Coop style "healthy" candy
and some old school treats.
If you are adamantly against your child having any candy
please bring them an alternative and we'll be sure to use it.

You can still sign up in the kitchen to make snacks (sugar free is always welcome),
take a shift running a game, or helping with set up/clean up.

Next week the whole school is going to the Eureka Zoo
for a skavenger hunt and visit to the petting zoo.
Driver sign-ups and permission slip returns are in the kitchen.
They will be having lunch at Sequoia Park, so if you are
sending a home lunch think picnic.

Remember to change you clocks on Sunday November 7th.
We will "fall back" an hour.

November 11th is Veteran's Day and school is closed.
November 12th is a Teacher Duty Day and school is closed for students.
Enjoy the four day weekend.

The following week, Nov. 15-19 will be all minimum days
for our first set of parent conferences.
School will be out at 1:10, and there will be aftercare as usual.

You will be able to sign up for a conference slot
the week before.
We hope you all take advantage of this chance to
speak one-on-one with your chid's teacher.
It is an excellent way to stay connected to
what is happening in the classrooms.

Then, November 22-26 is Thanksgiving Break and we are closed.

If you are in need of child care during school closure,
let us know and we will try to
help you find alternative care in the community.

Also, congratulations to our new Steering Committee members
Suzie Kelley and Meka Hunt.
We are so happy to have them on the board.
The next meeting is Monday November 15th at 6:00.
Everyone is welcome to attend, but there is not childcare at that time.

See ya'll soon.

Friday 9/24

Hi all,

In case you did not hear, today was our first "Fun Friday",
our new Friday routine.
Students were put into three groups and each group
rotated to three activities throughout the day.
It seemed to go well, but please ask your child/ren for feedback.

Next Monday, 9/27, is out first Steering Committee meeting at 6:00.
We still have openings on the committee and are looking for interested parents.
A sign-up will be posted next week, but if you are considering
being on the committee, please try to attend this meeting
to get a sense of what we do.

And just so know,
parents are always welcome to these meetings if they have any
ideas, questions or concerns they would like to bring to the board.

Next Monday we will also be welcoming the Arcata Fire Department
to our school in the morning.
They will be bringing a fire truck and the students will
have a truck tour that includes trying out some of the equipment.

We also have our annual trip to the Pumpkin Patch
scheduled for Wednesday October 6th.
Look for permission slips in your mailboxes next week
nd driver sign-ups in the kitchen.

Happy Fall and have a great weekend.

Wednesday September, 8

Hi everyone.

Here are a few reminders about Trillium-related happenings in September:

1) This Friday, 9/10, the 3-5 graders are going
to Trinidad to visit the marine lab.

They are planning lunch at the beach,
then on to the marine lab to explore the touch-tanks and complete
a microscope project.

They need parent drivers.
Please sign up in the kitchen.

2) Next Tuesday, 9/14, there is a K-2 parent meeting at 5:30.
There are notices in your parent box with the details.

3) It is time to start Learn-to-Earn again this year.
For those of you who may not know,
Learn-to-Earn is a banking program through Umpqua Bank.
Students can open a bank account with $1.00,
then make weekly deposits- all at school.

We are looking for a parent volunteer to run this program.
If you are interested, please talk to Marianne.

4)Our school's Steering Committee has 2 openings for parent representatives.

Sign-up sheets for interested parents will be in the kitchen.
Depending on the interest, the final decision will be put to a parent vote
as outlined in our charter.

The Steering Committee is our school board,
and it handles policies, practices,
budgeting, the charter and the overall running of the school.

It is a once-a-month commitment, with some additional needs
depending on what may arise.
If this sounds like something you may be interested in,
please sign up for a possible seat on the committee.

5) It is also time to think about fundraising.
Our fundraising committee has made some
amazing contributions to the school over the past few years-
including the new floors, music classes, supplementing fieldtrip funds
and making classroom contributions for special events.

There are a few recurring fundraisers that are ready to go-
they just need a few motivated people.
New ideas are always welcome too.
Please let us know if this is your forte.

6) Next Monday, 9/13, there is no school for students-
it is a teacher duty day. Please make a note of it.

7) We still need current emergency contact information from many families.
Please be sure that we have your current phone numbers
and at least one local emergency contact.

Hopefully we will never need to use them, but unexpected
things do sometimes make it essential that we can reach you.
Thanks.

8) There seems to be no lice at Trillium. Yeah!

9) Last- but very important- if your child gets snack or lunch
at school please fill out your free/reduced lunch application,
(or if you are low-income-even if you never eat the school food).

Student's free/reduced status from last year will expire soon.
Don't get stuck with an unnecessary bill!
There are applications in the library.

August 12th

Hi all.
I sent out an email to everyone earlier today to say hello and
to remind you that our first day of school
is coming right up- Monday August 23rd at 9:00.

On the first day, student are able to order a school lunch
or bring one from home.
We are inviting families to join us on that day for a lunch potluck at 12:45.

Families can meet one another, tour the school,
fill out paperwork and get general information about the upcoming year.
We hope you can join us.
There will be aftercare.

If you are new to the school, or new to the blog-
it i always helpful when people comment on posts to let us know
you are getting the information, and also to add questions or additions
if needed.

Trillium also has a facebook page and any of you are invited to become "friends" of Trillium.
Please remember that facebook is public, not private, so we mainly use that format for
personal interactions and a as way to get to know each other and network within the greater community.

All school information is considered private and will not necessarily be posted there.

One more thing to remember about facebook is that it is not necessarily kid-appropriate.
Adults post all kinds of thoughts and links, and we are neither willing nor able to censor them.
If your student becomes a "friend" of Trillium
we encourage you to also become a friend so you can edit if necessary.

Next Thursday we are having a clean-up day at the school.
If you have any time we would appreciate a hand getting the school ready for Monday.
We will be there at 11:00, and if we don;t see you then, we will see you bright and early on Monday!

July 2010

Hello everyone,

I hope your summer is going well
and you are finding time to enjoy.

This message is not easy to share
because we have recently lost an important
member of our Trillium community.

We were all sad when Anne, Chloe and Richard Childress
decided to move out of the area
at the end of this school year.

However, Anne unexpectedly died in her sleep
a few days after they arrived at their new home.

They are with Richard's family,
and a memorial service is scheduled this week in Big Bear.

Trillium will be hosting an event at the school
in memory of Anne next Wednesday from 2:00-5:00 PM.
We invite people to come and share.

* Hospice of Humboldt will have a representative here for support
*"Talking about death with children" information will be available
for anyone who needs it
* A Memory Book will be created for the family, and
* A collage will be made specifically for Chloe.

This has all been very difficult for Chloe,
and Richard has asked everyone to restrain
from sending her condolences.

This allows the family to attend to
Chloe without additional upset.
We will focus our efforts on sending Chloe
loving memories from her time at Trillium.

The memory book will be sent to Richard.

If you have any questions please contact the school: 822-4721.
Or, you can contact Marianne, Michalea, or Rhoni.

Email is preferred: trilliumcharterschool@yahoo.com

Spring!

Hello Trillium Folks.

This school year is starting to feel as though it's flying by!
It's already springtime, and we are making a lot of plans
for the rest of the year.

For now, here are just a few reminders:

This Friday, March 12th:

Lisa will be subbing for Aly.

Sarah's class is going to the Arcata High School Math Fair at 9:50- always fun.
They will attend the math fair from 10:00-10:45, then walk over to swimming
at the community pool.

Aly's class will also be swimming from 11:00-12:00,
then back to school for lunch.

Thank you to all parents who have been driving.
You help is much appreciated.

Next week is HSU spring break so there will be NO SWIMMING.
The students will swim again on Wednesday March 24th.

Next week is also parent conference week,
so it will be early dismissal all week.

Aftercare will begin at 1:10 and will be available until 5:30- as usual.

PLease sign up for a parent conference.
These are the last scheduled conferences for the year,
and always help parents feel more connected to what is going on in the classroom.
Sign-up sheets are posted.

The 3-5 class will be visiting the Humboldt County Science Fair
at HSU next Friday from 11:00-12:00.

10 Trillium projects will be displayed along with projects
from every school in the county.

Look for permission slips in your parent boxes and
driver sign-ups on the classroom door.

We have a spring equinox garden party scheduled for
Sunday March, 21 from 11:00-3:00.

The plan is to make raised beds in the garden area,
revamp the compost,
clean out the greenhouse, prune the bushes,
and hopefully do some planting.

If you have any plants, wood, or other supplies to donate
we will put it to good use.
Mostly, we just need some help, so hopefully you can make it.

Potluck lunch will be at 12:30.

That's about it for now.
We'll keep you posted as new events are scheduled.

Science Night

Tomorrow is our annual Science Night and Open House.
The students have been working so hard to get ready for this event.

The K-2 students have been doing scientific explorations
and will have displays and activities to share.

The 3-5 students have been doing individual and small group projects
on topics of their interest. Some were experiments and others were research projects.
All students have created a display and will be available to present their information
answer your questions.

We are asking parents to please bring finger foods to share.
The school will provide tea, coffee and juice.

This is also our open house for visiting families looking at schools for next fall,
and will begin at 6:30.

Next week will begin our PE unit on swimming.
The students will be grouped by their ability on the first day
and there will be groups for swimmers at every level.
If you have not paid your $20.00 swim fee yet, please bring it in this week.

The students will swim on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:00-12:00.
Permission slips and information sheets are in your parent boxes.

We will need parent drivers and at least one dad to help in the boys locker room.
The Arcata Pool is very strict about their policy- no women in the men's locker room!
Please let us know if you can help.

We are planning a Spring Equinox Garden Party at Trillium on Sunday March 21st.
We're planning to make new garden beds, weed, prune, and plant.
Look for volunteer sign up sheets in a few weeks.
Donations of wood, plants, herbs and your time are needed to make this a success.
Plus, it will be fun!

That's all for now.
We hope to see your family at Science Night.
