November 2013

Thanks to all the parents who voted in our recent Steering Committee elections.
We had our first meeting last Wednesday and your new committee is:

Suzy Kelley- President
Meka Hunt- Vice President
Jusy Pasko- Secretary
Lori Cortez-Regan- Treasurer
Mark Wright- Board Member
Ciara Hunt- Board Member
Michaela Murphy- Community Member

The next meeting is Tuesday December 10th at 6:00
and will continue on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Unless otherwise stated, all meetings are open and all parents are invited to attend.
If you ever have anything for the agenda please submit it to Marianne by the Friday before the meeting.

Next week are parent conferences.
These happen twice each school year and the teachers work very hard to prepare information for each family. Attending a conference is one of the best ways you can support your child's school progress.
Please sign up ASAP. Spots are filling up quickly.

Monday -Thursday of next week are also minimum days.
School is out at 1:10 for all students.
There will be aftercare until 5:30 as usual.
Please be aware of the potential to use a lot of extra aftercare.
If this is a financial hardship for your family-  please plan accordingly.

The week of November 25-29 we are closed for Thanksgiving Break. Enjoy!

We will be back on Monday December 2nd with our regularly scheduled program.

Staff Changes

We are sad to inform everyone that our Aftercare Director, Liz, is leaving on
and her last day at Trillium is this Friday.
Liz has been a dynamic addition to the Trillium community and we will sincerely miss her.

However, we are pleased to welcome our new AC Director Katelyn Collins
to the Trillium team.

Katelyn is training this week with Liz during aftercare so please take a moment to introduce
yourself and welcome her her to the school.
She will be running the program with the help of Izzy starting next week.

Thank you.

October 2013

October is a busy month at Trillium- but it's also filled with fall fun.

Please mark your calendars with the following:

Tuesday Oct. 8: Picture Day at 9:30
Order forms went out in parent mailboxes and there are blanks in the kitchen.
Every student will have their photo taken for the yearbook. Please send in your
payment with your order form. If you cannot purchase photos tomorrow there will
be opportunities again in December and March.

Wednesday Oct 9th: All school trip to the Co-op Pumpkin Patch. Please return trip slips and sign up
to drive on the kitchen. If your child is 8 or younger- check the latest in car seat
laws. CA updated their laws in January 2013 and every student must travel in
a seat as directed by CA law. Drivers- please be here at 10:30.

Wednesday Oct. 9th: Steering Committee Meeting at 6:00
This is our first board meeting of the year. This is an open meeting and everyone
is welcome to attend. We have 2 parent representative seats open this school year.
If you are considering running for a seat or would like to participate in this way
you are encouraged to attend this meeting. Elections will be in November.
We will also discuss fundraising for the year at this meeting.

Thursday Oct. 17th: The Author Festival
We are very pleased to welcome author Judy Cox to Trillium. We will have a pot
luck luncheon at 12:30- look for invitations in your parent mailbox this week.
After the luncheon Judy will give presentations and read to each class. We hope
                                you can join us.

Thursday Oct. 31st: Halloween Carnival 1:00-3:00
This is our annual student carnival. Thanks to everyone who has already
volunteered to help out. We need parents to run games, make snacks and donate
prizes. It's not too late to volunteer- forms are in the kitchen. We are also looking
for someone willing to organize the carnival. If you are interested please talk to
                                Marianne.

Thursday Oct. 31st: Black Alice Halloween Costume Ball & Trillium Benefit
Back Alice is a group of musicians who were former Trillium dads (most of them).
They only play on Halloween, and this year all proceeds from food and beverage
sales will go directly to Trillium. We need help with this!

We know it is on Halloween, but it is from 9:00-1:00- after most trick-or-treating
is over. Please consider helping serve drinks and food, working the door to check
IDs and sell wrist bands or hang up/give out flyers. So far we have
donations in the works with Mad River Brewery, Redwood Curtain, Lost Coast
Brewery and Eel River Brewery. We are also hoping to work out a deal with a
local pizza place to get a discount on pizza to sell. Do you have any connections?
Are you willing to make phone calls? Please let us know.

Friday Nov. 1st: Teacher Duty Day- No school for students

* Water bottle update: We are about $30 short from our goal to purchase a water bottle for every
student. If you can help out in any way let us know.

There has been a lot of information going into them about class work,  fundraising and upcoming events. If you have students in both classes or a 2-household arrangement please let us know what your mail preference is- Do you want one box? one in each class? Is one mailbox sufficient or would you each like your own? We are happy to accommodate your family as long as you let us know. Thanks.

Welcome Back Everyone

We are on our third day of school and off to a great start!

You may have noticed on the front board that it says to locate to your parent box,
however, we ordered new mailboxes for K-2 parents and they have not arrived just yet.
As soon as they do, they will be installed above the kid cubbies in Sarah's room and then you can
find your mailbox.

Until then, you can find free and reduced lunch applications, aftercare forms and calendars for the school year in the kitchen next to the parent information board.
That will be a good place all year to look for paperwork copies.

Weekly lunch menus will continue to be posted in the kitchen.
If you want to look ahead you can go to the Pacific Union website for a detailed monthly menu.
http://www.humboldt.k12.ca.us/pacificun_sd/menu.php

We are working updating parent phone lists for the year. Unless we hear otherwise, we will list your phone number on the parent contact list. No last names or addresses are listed.

Please remember to let us know if you have any new contact information- address, phone numbers or email.
Current contact information is extremely important- usually at unexpected moments.
Last year's emergency cards will be in your parent boxes next week. Please look them over,
make changes right on the card if needed and return them in the kitchen.

Looking ahead in September:

Monday 9/2: Labor Day- school is closed
Monday 9/9: Teacher Duty Day- no school for students

This information will always be posted on the board in front of the school as well.
Please remember to check it every Monday.

We hope your children are having a great start to their year. If you have any questions or concerns, please come talk to a staff memebr. We will always listen and make adjustments as needed.
Thanks.

January 2013

This is just a quick reminder that swimming lessons begin tomorrow- Tuesday January 29th.
Please send your kids with everything they need for swimming-
suit, towel, goggles & hair ties are all that is needed.
We are taking the bus to the pool.

Also- tomorrow the bus is first taking everyone to HSU for a Center Arts show.
The bus will leave at 9:10- please be on time.

We still need a male chaperone to help out in the boys bathroom at the pool.
Please let us know if you can help.

One last thing- the flu season has been hitting us hard.
Right now we have been averaging 5 absences every day with symptoms ranging from
high fever & sore throat to vomiting, cough and rash.
Please be sure that your kids have extra clothes for the frequent changes in weather.
A change of clothes in case of accidental wetness is always a good idea this time of year.

We are trying to keep everyone healthy with frequent hand washing, jackets and hot drinks when possible. Please help us keep your kids warn and dry to promote good heath. Thanks.

January 2013

Happy New Year and welcome back everyone.
We have some exciting plans for the new year, so here is a little update:

January 9: Running Club begins at 9:00 sharp!

Trillium Running Club is beginning again as training for the Foggy Bottom Milk Run on Sunday March 10th. Everyone is welcome to join. Students may join the school running club even if they are not planning to be in the race, however, race participation is encouraged. Look for information about registering for the race in your parent mailboxes. Sarah is the head of this group, so please direct questions to her. Parents are invited to run with the club and in the race as well. Running will begin promptly at 9:00 in all weather- so please send appropriate clothing for your student to change after running. Regular running will take place on Mondays and Fridays beginning next week.

January 10 & 11: Olivia will be substituting for Sarah while she at a conference

January 15: Steering Committee meeting 6:00- We are in the process of Charter Renewal with Pacific
Union District. This is be the focus of the January meeting.

January 21: Martin Luther King Day- school is closed

January 22: Teacher Duty Day- no school for students

January 29: 9:30- All school field trip to HSU Center Arts- Dinosaur Petting Zoo
                   11:00- Swimming Lessons begin

About Swimming: Our annual PE unit on swimming will be at the Arcata Pool again this year. All students are required to participate in swimming lessons regardless of prior experience. On the first day students will be grouped according to ability and will work in these groups for the 8 class series. We will be taking the bus to and from swimming so we do not need parent drivers, however, we need at least one male chaperone to help in the boys locker room. Female staff members are never allowed in this area, but the younger boys do need assistance. Swimming dates are January 29 & 31, then February 5, 8, 12, 14, 26 & 28 from 11:00-12:00. Please let us know if you are available. Thanks!

3-5 graders are beginning their Science Projects that will conclude with for our school Science Night on February 28.  Most students will need support at home in order to complete a successful experiment. Students are currently brainstorming ideas for their projects, and need to have a working project underway ASAP. Aly and Marianne are available to answer questions or provide support throughout this process. Please ask for help if you need it.

January is returning enrollment month. Returning enrollment gives priority to current students and their school age siblings.  Look for forms in your parent box and return them in the kitchen by January 31 to guarantee a space for next fall.

About attendance: Regular, timely attendance is extremely important for all students. Please make every effort to get your children to school on time so they do not miss out on important morning meetings or instruction. Thank you.

If you know your student is going to be out of town or has an extended illness, please sign up for independent study. This helps students to keep up on school work and allows us to mark students present for those days. Please try to give us at least one day advance notice to make an IS packet.

If your student is going to be absent, we do appreciate a call to let us know they are not coming.

If you are just coming late, don't forget to call before 9:30 if you need to order a school lunch.

If your child has a fever, is vomiting, has a severe cough or any other possibly contagious symptom, please keep them home. If they were sick during the night it is best to wait a day to be sure. If they are on medication, 24 hrs. usually assures they are no longer contagious. Thanks for your consideration.

Trillium is currently hiring an Aftercare Aide. If you or someone you know would like to apply please send resumes to trilliumcs@gmail.com. This is an immediate opening and will be filled ASAP.
