Spring Update

It is springtime and we have a lot of exciting projects, events, and trips planned.
So, here is your update:

Next Friday, April 22nd is Earth Day.
We are hosting a family event from 11:00-1:10 and hope you can make it.

11:00-12:30: Appropriate technology demos
Earth-friendly projects/activities
Gardening in our new planters in front of the school- parents are invited to help
12:30-1:10: Family potluck
1:10: Early dismissal- minimum day

If you have any ideas for Earth Day projects please let us know.
We are planning this carnival-style and want the kids to have fun.

We are still also looking for donations for our garden projects that keep expanding.
Plants, seeds, tools, gloves, soil, amendments and time/energy are all appreciated.

By the way- have you seen our new beautiful planter boxes?
They were designed and built by Endless Gardens, run by Dylan Hunt and James Kelley.
Thank you!

The following week, April 25-29: Spring Break

The week after Spring Break: STAR Testing begins on Monday
3-5 graders will test Monday-Friday and try to finish that week.
2nd graders will begin later in the week and finish the following week while the 3-5 class is camping.

Please remember that we make STAR testing as painless as possible.
It is important for our small school that students participate- but we continue with the
Always Try Your Best Trillium Value as the guiding principle for testing.

Please help your kids get extra sleep and
be on time to school during test week.

Then, May 9-11,
the 3-5 graders are going camping at Wolf Creek Outdoor Educational Facility.
This is a great trip for student bonding and local ecology instruction.
Look in parent boxes for information about this trip.
Parent chaperones are needed.

The end of the year is coming right up- including our End of the Year Trip to Pamplin Grove June 7-9.
This is how we end every school year- camping together.
Last year's trip was rather damp- so think sunshine for this year!

Please mark your calendars for this fun family camp-out.
Information will be in parent boxes soon.
FYI- all students not camping will have independent study packets this year due to limited staff availability.
If you cannot go camping- talk to us sooner than later.
Thank you!

January 31

Here are some things you should know:

1) Today is the final day for priority enrollment for next fall- returning students and siblings only.
Turn in your enrollment form to secure a spot for next fall.
Open enrollment begins in February and is open to the general community.

2) Science fair projects for 3-5 graders should be underway.
There are 2 student projects that need permission for students to be involved-
one is a taste test (food only of course) and the other is an obstacle course.
Please sign and return slips if you will allow your student to participate.

If you are doing a project at home- please let us know if you need any assistance.

3) The Steering Committee is NOT meeting today-
we will meet next Monday at 6:00.
The agenda will include review of the Single Plan for Student Achievement
and the fiscal stability of Aftercare.
Committee members- please read over the Single Plan in advance-
all parents are welcome to attend this meeting.

4) This Wednesday, February 2nd, the K-2 class is going on a tour of the Arcata Coop.
This is a fun tour of all the departments and includes snacks.
Please sign up to drive/chaperone in the kitchen.

5) Our gardening committee- headed by Meka and Suzie,
has been awarded 2 gardening grants totaling $1200- yea!

Thursday afternoons are garden days with outside activities from 2-3,
and aftercare has been making and serving food from the garden every week.
If you would like to help out- please join us.
If you are not available at those times but want to help let us know.

This is a very exciting extension of our science program and we encourage everyone to get involved.
We are also accepting donations of seeds. plants, soil amendments, garden tools & gloves, and lumber for planter boxes.
Please talk to Meka or Marianne if you would like to make a donation.

6) This is your last chance to order school pictures.
The order will go out on Friday, Feb. 4th.
If you already ordered a class picture -they are also part of this order.
Order forms are in the library.

Coming up next month:

3-5 class to Flips for Kids on Thursday 2/10,
K-2 class to Flips for Kids on Friday 2/18.
We will need drivers for these trips.

Don't forget to put Science Night on your calendar- Thursday, February 17th at 6:30.
This is an all-school event.

That's all for now.

Happy 2011!

Now that we are back from our long break
it is Science Fair time.!

3-5 grade students will all be doing science experiments
about a topic of their choice.

Please talk to your child about their project-
it will help them organize their thoughts and stay engaged in the scientific process.
Let us know if you need any supplies or guidance on how to help your student.

Science Night is Thursday February 17th, which gives us one month to complete projects.
This event is always a huge success- please put it on your calendar.

Remember- next Monday is Martin Luther King Day
and school is closed (1/17/11).
Also- the following Monday is a teacher duty day
and there is no school for students.

We recently received some sad news regarding our Aftercare program
that will potentially effect our entire school community.

The program is not financially solvent and is losing money.
Sadly, the only reason for this deficit is that people are using care
but they are not paying their bills.

There are currently over $4000 in outstanding bills,
and without this revenue we cannot continue the program.
So, we are taking action to try and save our beloved Aftercare program.

If your current bill is over $100, you also received a letter requesting a $50.00 payment by January 31.
This is a required payment, and if it is not made
your child will no longer be able to attend Aftercare.

Those students will have to wait for pick-up in a designated area
while parents are called to come pick them up.

This situation will be reported to our governing board
at the next Steering Committee meeting (Jan. 31 at 6:00),
and we will have to consider the possibility of discontinuing the program.

Please do your part to keep Aftercare available at Trillium
by paying down your bill.
If you cannot afford the cost, then please pick your children up at 3:10.

We enjoy your children and wish it did not have to be this way,
but Aftercare cannot continue to pay for snacks, supplies, and staff
without sufficient revenue coming in.

Feel free to attend the next Steering Committee meeting and join in the discussion.
Possibly you have a great idea for grant funding or fundraising
to help subsidize the program?
We welcome all ideas!

And for those of you who have been consistently paying your bills
or making your scheduled payments- thank you!
We appreciate your ongoing support.

It's December

Believe it or not there are only 12 more days of school until winter break!

I wanted to announce the next Monday- December 6th will be school picture day.
Order forms will be in your parent boxes this week,
so send it back with your payment on Monday.
We will begin at 9:30.

Every student will have their photo taken for the yearbook
and a class picture will be taken as well.

The students are currently working on a geography unit
that will lead up to our Multi-cultural Fair on Thursday December 16th.

The K-2 students are making globes and studying bears around the world.

3-5 grade students are working on individual/small-group projects.
They have chosen a country of interest and will be exploring
traditions, food, and culture from that country.

Food, information and activities from their chosen country will be presented at the Multi-cultural Fair.
Ask your student what they are studying and what they have learned.

The Steering Committee will meet on Monday December 13 at 6:00.
All parents are welcome to add agenda items and/or attend the meeting.

November

Just a quick reminder that next week is parent conference week.
This means 2 important things:

1) Every day next week is early dismissal, so school is over at 1:10.
There will be aftercare during this time, but
be aware that aftercare bills can double on a minimum week-
so use your child care as needed.

2) This is your chance to meet with Aly or Sarah and get first-hand
information about your child/ren.
The teachers will have report cards to discuss and give to you,
and they always have insightful thoughts to share about your wonderful kids.
Please take advantage of the time we have scheduled for afternoon meetings.

Next Friday (11/19) you are all invited to join us for our annual Harvest Potluck.
Because it is a half-day, we are having a brunch potluck at 11:00.
Please join us for food and company before our Thanksgiving week off.

* Don't forget- this Thursday and Friday (11/11 & 11/12) there is no school for students.

End of October Already!

As the season is rapidly changing to wet and cold,
we are staying busy at school and want to let
you know about the next few weeks.

This Friday is our annual Halloween Carnival.

Please come and have fun with us from 1:00-3:00.
This is the one day we have a moratorium on candy
and we usually have a blend of Coop style "healthy" candy
and some old school treats.
If you are adamantly against your child having any candy
please bring them an alternative and we'll be sure to use it.

You can still sign up in the kitchen to make snacks (sugar free is always welcome),
take a shift running a game, or helping with set up/clean up.

Next week the whole school is going to the Eureka Zoo
for a skavenger hunt and visit to the petting zoo.
Driver sign-ups and permission slip returns are in the kitchen.
They will be having lunch at Sequoia Park, so if you are
sending a home lunch think picnic.

Remember to change you clocks on Sunday November 7th.
We will "fall back" an hour.

November 11th is Veteran's Day and school is closed.
November 12th is a Teacher Duty Day and school is closed for students.
Enjoy the four day weekend.

The following week, Nov. 15-19 will be all minimum days
for our first set of parent conferences.
School will be out at 1:10, and there will be aftercare as usual.

You will be able to sign up for a conference slot
the week before.
We hope you all take advantage of this chance to
speak one-on-one with your chid's teacher.
It is an excellent way to stay connected to
what is happening in the classrooms.

Then, November 22-26 is Thanksgiving Break and we are closed.

If you are in need of child care during school closure,
let us know and we will try to
help you find alternative care in the community.

Also, congratulations to our new Steering Committee members
Suzie Kelley and Meka Hunt.
We are so happy to have them on the board.
The next meeting is Monday November 15th at 6:00.
Everyone is welcome to attend, but there is not childcare at that time.

See ya'll soon.

Friday 9/24

Hi all,

In case you did not hear, today was our first "Fun Friday",
our new Friday routine.
Students were put into three groups and each group
rotated to three activities throughout the day.
It seemed to go well, but please ask your child/ren for feedback.

Next Monday, 9/27, is out first Steering Committee meeting at 6:00.
We still have openings on the committee and are looking for interested parents.
A sign-up will be posted next week, but if you are considering
being on the committee, please try to attend this meeting
to get a sense of what we do.

And just so know,
parents are always welcome to these meetings if they have any
ideas, questions or concerns they would like to bring to the board.

Next Monday we will also be welcoming the Arcata Fire Department
to our school in the morning.
They will be bringing a fire truck and the students will
have a truck tour that includes trying out some of the equipment.

We also have our annual trip to the Pumpkin Patch
scheduled for Wednesday October 6th.
Look for permission slips in your mailboxes next week
nd driver sign-ups in the kitchen.

Happy Fall and have a great weekend.
